What is Kinesiology?

Kinesiology is a communication system for people that want to change.

Testing one or more muscles helps us to find what lies behind the life challenge or health symptom you are experiencing, and what can be done to help resolve it.

Think of muscle response testing like a direct line to your body’s wisdom.

The study found that when testing for truth & lies:

Muscle response testing is significantly more accurate than chance or intuitive guesses.
The accuracy of muscle response testing is in the same range as manual blood pressure testing.
It is as accurate as a commonly used medical procedure when used to assess what is true for an individual.

In the old days, when we wanted to call someone, we used to pick up the phone, dial an exchange, and someone would create a manual connection that would allow us to have our conversation.  These days we rely much less on a manual connection, and rather make use of signals that beam through the air and connect us right across the globe.

We live in a connected world and, regardless of the distance, we can create a connection that allows us to work together.  (Even with muscle testing!)

Once we have a time that works, I send you a Zoom link that will allow us to talk via phone or computer.  We can discuss what you want to work on and (with your permission) I muscle test on myself to find the underlying stressors that are impacting on your health or keeping you from achieving your life goals.  (Think of it like a shared document that we can both work on together.)

Kate directed me quickly and efficiently to my blindspot. It was so obvious, so simple, but very profound. I now know what to pay attention to, and that information is priceless.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of health conditions can kinesiology help with?

Stress is a significant causitive factor in many conditions.  Kinesiology helps to identify key areas of stress so that they can be dealt with.  The nervous system, muscular system, endocrine system, respiratory system & digestive system all respond to stress with co-ordinated responses.  When a stress is resolved, these key systems of our body can return to more effective function & balance.  Headaches, digestive problems, allergies, eczema, menstrual difficulties, recurrent infections (& many more) are all physical symptoms that show that your body’s stress load is impacting its ability to function & heal effectively. Muscle testing can help you to find the root cause of the stress so that it can be resolved & your body can heal.

Emotional stress from current & past experiences can significantly impact on your quality of life, your health & ability to function.  Kinesiology can help to identify & resolve the key areas of stress associated with fears, phobias, addictions & depression.  It can help with the development of confidence & self-esteem, or reduce your stress & improve your performance in sports or work events.

Kinesiology can improve the way we use our mind by removing the stress so that our neurology can work more effectively. This enables you to find better ways of solving problems & can make learning easier.  It can be supportive when working with learning difficulties, or assist with difficulties experienced in the fields of language, reading & maths.

If you are experiencing, or have experienced any type of stress in your life, kinesiology can help you.

Is there anything kinesiology definitely can’t help with?

Kinesiology is not a substitute for proper medical examination, diagnosis & treatment, & is not intended to replace or supersede any medical treatment or advice given to you by your doctor or any other medical specialist.  If you have a broken bone, need stitches or have any sort of health emergency, kinesiology is definitely not the right treatment for you.

Once you are stable, your bones set in place, you are no longer bleeding or in need of actute care, then your job is to heal.  As a Kinesiologist I do not “heal” or “treat” but work to reduce stress & re-establish balance so that you can move forward with your own process of healing.

I cannot help you to grow new limbs, change the colour of your hair, or make your husband, kids, colleagues or mother-in-law behave the way that you want, but I can help you to resolve your own stress related to any of these issues.  When you deal with your own fears, beliefs, habits & stress, it may, in turn, change your relationship with the body you have & the people that surround you.

Is it possible to use kinesiology alongside prescribed medication?

Absolutely.  I work on the stress that underlies a condition, not on the symptoms / condition itself.

Do you ever recommend or prescribe medication as part of kinesiology treatment?

I am not a medical doctor and therefore cannot diagnose conditions,  prescribe medication, or “take you off” your medication. Please consult your medical doctor for that.

On occasion I may suggest that specific supplements or essences may be a useful support to your recovery. These are suggestions, not prescriptions and the decision on whether to take them remains entirely your own.

I’ve heard that kinesiology can tell you which vitamins I need to take, do you do this?
Nutrition is one of the options on my lists that clients can draw on, but in reality, it only sometimes shows up as the most important issue to support their health.
Most of the people that I see are getting sufficient nutrition.  They may have a problem absorbing it,  utilising it, or excreting it when there is too much. When it comes to nutrition, most of the time it is not a significant lack of nutrition that is the problem, usually there is a hole somewhere else that needs plugging so that you can use the nutritional support you are getting more effectively.
When there is a significant stress (past or present), your digestion can be disturbed & adding more nutrition doesn’t necessarily solve the problem.  My job is to present all the options to your nervous system (including nutrition), find the most critical areas of stress that are impacting on your health & find how to change that.  Nutrition may or may not be the solution that your body needs & so I do not set out to test for what vitamins you need.  I set out to find what will support you best & create the most long lasting change.
How many appointments would you typically recommend to see results?

The number of sessions varies for each individual.  What you are choosing to work on, what underlies that issue and how much stress you are currently under can all play a role in how quickly you see results.  Most people will notice improvement after one to three visits, but I can never know how many sessions you will need.

How long do the results last?  Will I need to come back for more appointments in the future?

As above, this is unique to each individual & their circumstances. Every day we face mental, emotional & physical stressors.  How long we remain in balance depends on our genetic make-up & our ability to adapt to change appropriately. If you are living through a high stress period, have a poor diet or environment, live a fast paced, emotionally charged or high stress lifestyle, you may find this balance is more quickly disturbed.  Our aim is always to create the habits & changes that support your health & well-being in the long-term.

You mention underlying stories, beliefs and emotions. How does kinesiology differ from therapy?

Kinesiology is a form of therapy in it’s own right.  Counselling or psychotherapy is a primarily mental / emotional process & is usually a spoken one.  Kinesiology focuses on the whole person  (mental, emotional and physical) & stressors are identified through the testing of your muscle response.  The stresses underlying a mental health condition may be related to beliefs & emotions, but they could also be related to an imbalance of the bacteria in your gut.  Treatment may involve talking about something that comes up, but might also involve the use of accupressure points, nutrition or gentle structural adjustment.

How does having a kinesiology appointment online differ from an in-person session?

The biggest difference is the muscle testing.  If you come to a session in person, I will obviously test your muscles & work directly on your body to help correct any imbalance.  If we work online, I surrogate for you and do the muscle testing on myself.  I guide you through any physical process you may need (rubbing or holding points) so that your body has a real, physical stimulation to help it create the changes.  There are some structural corrections that cannot be offered when working online, but usually we can create balance and defuse the stress another way.

Are online kinesiology appointments as effective as in person appointments?

In my experience the person that you work with, is more important than whether you have a kinesiology appointment online or face-to-face. If you like a kinesiologist or something about them inspires you, they will likely bring out the best in you.

I have had online kinesiology appointments with clients all over the world whose health and well-being have benefited enormously.  I have had local clients that just wanted to control a symptom – they should have seen someone else instead because they were not interested in true, deep level healing.

Imagine it like choosing a cellphone provider.  The best global or local provider may be useless to you if they do not provide a service in your area.  You want the one that has good coverage in your specific area as well as a broad coverage elsewhere.  When choosing a kinesiologist, read their website, read what they post online in social media or on their blog.  Which kinesiologist seems to resonate with you / inspire you / speak your language?  Do they have a good, broad training?  Choose the best person for you – whether the appointment is online or not is immaterial.

Do you only work with women?

Although I work primarily with women, womanhood is not the primary deciding factor!  We are all human & I specialise in how the mental, emotional & physical are linked – something that is true for all of us.  Whoever you are, you are welcome!  (And if you have read this far to find an answer, you are clearly determined enough to find a solution that works for you, & that makes you my kind of person!)

Is kinesiology effective for helping children?

Kinesiology can help us to listen to what a child cannot say with their limited vocabulary and life experience. It is a wonderful tool for understanding your children better and for helping them to take control of their emotions and their health.

We can’t always change the community, the environment or the learning system that our children find themselves in, but we can help your child to be able to deal with the challenges that they face, and give them different options and better tools so that they can engage more effectively in the world in which they find themselves.

What is Neural Organisational Technique or NOT?

Neural Organization Technique is a specialised branch of Kinesiology which works through the central nervous system to restore structural, bio-chemical and emotional balance. Most people just book for a ‘normal’ appointment and if it tests as the best way forward for them I will do that, but some people seek it out directly.

“In layman’s terms… Imagine yourself as an extraordinary computer, using the most advanced technologies in computer design.  Your nervous system is the operating software.  It keeps you functioning to optimum standards.  Your digestive, endocrine and immune systems are the specialised programs, each one essential to a specific task.  Your muscular and skeletal structure is the output, allowing your body to do the “talking”.  Now, consider what would result if damage occurred to the programs!  The first program errors might be imperceptible.  However, compensating for those errors would soon lead to complications.  Eventually you would have to make some serious corrections.  You might even require a technician to reprogram a whole series of commands – and this is what an N.O.T practitioner does!

Trying to address structural or functional difficulties without addressing the relevant neurological short-circuiting is like changing a light bulb when the real problem is that you have blown a fuse.”

~ Neural Organization Technique International

NOT works with primal survival reflex systems (fight/ flight, feeding, reproduction) and corrects the neurological processes via a systematic process of neurological priority (i.e. survival is more important than feeding; feeding is more important than reproduction).  It was developed by Dr Carl Ferrari, a Chiropractor, and includes the use of acupressure, neuro vascular points, neuro lymphatic reflexes, and reactive muscle monitoring among other things.

The first part of the protocols takes the body out of the fight or flight stress response and work on the effects of cranial injury (eg whiplash, concussion).  The procedures then systematically check and correct the structure of the body (e.g. scoliosis, disk problems, back pain) and the biochemical components (eg. Thyroid, pancreas (blood sugar), and adrenal hormones). They then look at the arms, legs, feet and learning difficulties (eg dyslexia, ADD / ADHD).

Because the process is about reprogramming the nervous system, it may need some repetition to reinforce the changes, but then, once stable, the corrections should hold until the person encounters another major stress.

How does NOT differ from your other work?

Neural Organization Technique is a very structural process that works primarily on the nervous system.  Due to the structural nature of the treatment, it has to be run in person and cannot be done as distance work.  There are no emotions, no story, which is excellent for trauma as sometimes you don’t want to have to re-live the whole story again.  Other kinesiology methods that I use might help you to understand where current stress comes from, NOT simply helps rewire the stress reaction.

NOT is excellent for supporting change of structural / postural imbalances, for balancing hormones, and for assisting with learning difficulties.  I also find it very useful for supporting the nervous system when a client is stopping an addiction / changing medication levels.
